UTM parameters are small tags appended to a link that tell your analytics tool where a visitor came from. There are five (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content) and the first three are effectively mandatory. Without them, email, social and affiliate traffic usually shows up in GA4 as direct or unassigned, which means you cannot tell which channel paid your budget back.
What are the five UTM parameters?
Each parameter has one job. Three identify the campaign, two add detail. Correct usage means giving each one a single, consistent meaning.
- utm_source (required): the platform traffic came from. Example: newsletter, instagram, partner_x.
- utm_medium (required): the channel type. Example: email, cpc, social, affiliate.
- utm_campaign (required): the campaign name. Example: summer_sale_2026.
- utm_term: the keyword in paid search; mostly unnecessary if auto-tagging is on.
- utm_content: distinguishes variants inside one campaign. Example: banner_top versus banner_bottom.
How do you build a UTM link?
A UTM link is the destination URL plus a query string that starts with a question mark: https://site.com/product?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=summer_sale. Using a campaign URL builder instead of typing by hand prevents typos and unescaped characters.
- Pick the destination URL: the page you actually want the visitor to land on.
- Fill the three required parameters: source, medium and campaign name.
- Apply your writing standard: lowercase only, underscores instead of spaces, no accented characters.
- Test it: click the link and confirm the source appears correctly in the GA4 realtime report.
What are the most common UTM mistakes?
UTM data breaks quietly: you get no error message, only wrong reports. The four most frequent problems are inconsistent letter case, missing parameters, internal link pollution, and parameters dropped during redirects.
- Case drift: Facebook, facebook and FaceBook report as three separate sources.
- Missing utm_medium: channel grouping cannot be computed and traffic falls into unassigned.
- Redirect loss: shorteners and some redirects drop the query string; test the whole chain.
- Meaningless campaign names: campaign1 tells nobody anything six months later.

UTMs or auto-tagging for Google Ads?
For Google Ads, auto-tagging (gclid) is usually more accurate: the click ID carries campaign, ad group and keyword level data directly and is immune to manual typos. Only add UTMs in Google Ads when a third-party tool requires them, and do not turn auto-tagging off. We covered why the two systems report different numbers in GA4 vs Google Ads conversion discrepancy.
How do you set a naming standard for the team?
The value of UTMs comes from consistency. A simple standard saves hours when reading reports six months later: lowercase only, underscores between words, a date or period in the campaign name (summer_sale_2026_08), and medium values chosen from a fixed list. Keep that list in a shared sheet and generate every new campaign from it. For the full attribution picture see attribution models.
