Meta Ads Manager is the Meta tool where you build, manage and report on Facebook and Instagram ads. To read its reports correctly you need to pin down three things: which column set you are looking at, which attribution setting is applied and how the data is broken down. If those are unclear, the same campaign can look both 'profitable' and 'losing money'.
If you are building a campaign from scratch, start with our Facebook ads guide; this article focuses on the next stage: interpreting the numbers on screen.
What is Meta Ads Manager and how do you open it?
Ads Manager is an ad-account-level panel opened at adsmanager.facebook.com or via the Ads menu in Meta Business Suite. The account selector sits on the left, date range and filters at the top, and campaign, ad set and ad tabs in the middle. Several people can access one account; permissions are granted through the business portfolio.
- Campaign: sets the objective (sales, leads, traffic, awareness and so on).
- Ad set: audience, budget (when Advantage+ campaign budget is off), placements, optimization event and schedule.
- Ad: image, video, copy, link and tracking settings.
Which columns should you look at?
The default 'Performance' column set is not enough for most decisions. Use 'Customize columns' to build and save your own set. A practical core set for ecommerce: amount spent, results, cost per result, purchases, purchase conversion value, purchase ROAS, CPM, link CTR, frequency and landing page views.
- Results: depends on the ad set's optimization event; never compare ad sets with different goals using the 'results' column.
- Link CTR vs CTR (all): 'all' counts every click including profile clicks, likes and expansions; link CTR shows the creative's effect on traffic.
- Frequency: average impressions per person; rising frequency with falling CTR is a fatigue signal.
- Landing page views: a large gap versus link clicks points to a slow page or a missing pixel.
How does the March 2026 attribution change affect your reports?
In March 2026 Meta redefined click-through attribution: only link clicks (clicks that take people to a website, form, app or Messenger) now count as click-through conversions. Likes, comments, shares, saves, profile visits and video views of at least 5 seconds moved to a 1-day engage-through window. As a result, many accounts saw click-through conversions drop with no change in spend.
The default attribution setting is 7-day click + 1-day engage-through + 1-day view. 'Compare attribution settings' in the columns menu shows the same campaign across windows, and the breakdown menu can split results by attribution setting. For the broader logic, see our guide to attribution models.

What are breakdowns for?
Breakdowns split the same metric by age, gender, placement, platform, device, region or time. The most useful are placement and age: they show where Advantage+ placements actually spend and which age group drives up cost per conversion. Some breakdowns cannot be combined, and small cells may be rounded because of privacy thresholds.
- Delivery: age, gender, country, region, placement, platform, device, time of day.
- Action: conversion device, destination, video view type.
- Time: day, week, two weeks, month; ideal for trend comparisons.
How do you read the learning phase and delivery status?
If the delivery column says 'Learning', the ad set is not yet stable. According to Meta's documentation, an ad set exits learning after about 50 optimization events within roughly 7 days of its last significant edit. 'Learning limited' means it is unlikely to reach that volume; the usual fix is consolidating audiences, budget or optimization events.
The most common Ads Manager reading mistakes
- Trusting yesterday's number: Ads Manager credits conversions to the day of the ad interaction, so the last 1-3 days can still grow.
- Comparing different objectives by 'results': a traffic ad set's result is a click; a sales ad set's is a purchase.
- Switching windows mid-period: the trend breaks and improvement or decline looks artificial.
- Not validating the pixel: without the Conversions API, conversions are under-reported (Meta pixel and CAPI setup).
- Treating platform ROAS as the only truth: Meta sees its own touchpoints; compare with GA4 and store data before moving budget.
How does Ads Sensor use Ads Manager data?
Ads Sensor reads your Meta ad account via the API and shows campaign, ad set and ad-level data in the same panel as Google Ads, TikTok, Criteo and GA4. Its AI analysis prioritizes risks such as rising frequency, cost spikes or conversion drops, proposes reasoned actions and applies them with your approval. 24/7 anomaly monitoring means you notice when something breaks without opening Ads Manager every morning.
