How Google AI Overviews Are Affecting Advertisers

AI summaries reshaped the search results page. As organic traffic narrowed, the value of paid visibility went up.

AI Overviews are AI-generated answer blocks Google places above search results, synthesized from multiple sources. For advertisers the impact splits in two: organic click-through rates on those queries dropped sharply, while paid click-through rates held up relatively well. The net effect is that paid visibility carries more strategic weight, and click costs have risen with that demand. Below are the measured numbers and a workable response plan.

What are AI Overviews and where do they appear?

An AI Overview is a summary block that answers the user's question directly at the top of the results page. The user does not have to click to get the answer, which raises the share of zero-click searches. They do not appear on every query: they are most common on informational and comparison searches, and far rarer on transactional and branded ones.

How much did organic clicks suffer?

The hit was hard. Industry measurement found organic click-through rate on AI Overview queries falling from 1.76% to 0.61%. Early 2026 shows a partial recovery: the same measurement rose from its December 2025 floor to around 2.4% by February 2026. So the picture is not catastrophic, but it has not returned to the old normal either. Traffic should now be judged by intent quality rather than raw volume.

Here is the interesting part: paid click-through rate on the same queries stayed relatively stable. Measurements put paid CTR on AI Overview queries in a 13 to 16% range through 2025 and into 2026. Ads may be pushed down the page alongside the summary, but the willingness to click does not disappear. Meanwhile, as organic space narrows, demand for paid visibility rises and pushes click costs upward.

What should advertisers do?

The right response is not to cut budget in panic but to rebalance the portfolio by query intent. The places where AI Overviews appear least are exactly where purchase intent is highest; shifting weight there is both cheaper and more profitable.

  1. Protect brand search: AI Overviews are rare on branded queries and conversion rates are high; clarify your branded versus non-branded split.
  2. Weight toward transactional queries: terms carrying intent such as buy, price and order became more valuable in this environment.
  3. Offset lost traffic with conversion: with fewer visitors, landing page conversion rate matters far more; see our landing page guide.
  4. Be visible inside AI engines: building quotable structure in content is now its own discipline; our GEO piece covers the frame.

How should measurement change?

Stop treating click volume alone as a health indicator. AI Overviews already filter out some low-intent clicks, so the conversion rate of remaining traffic may improve. Three things matter in this environment: actual conversions, cost per acquisition and total profit. To avoid getting lost between channel-level ROAS figures, use a blended metric like MER.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI Overviews appear on every search?
No. Frequency varies widely by query type. They are common on informational and comparison searches and noticeably rare on transactional and branded queries.
Can my ads appear inside an AI Overview?
Google has been expanding ad formats across AI surfaces in search. Availability varies by market and query type, so check the inventory and placement options in your campaign settings regularly.
My organic traffic dropped, should I shift budget to paid?
There is no automatic answer. First look at which query types lost traffic. If the loss is on informational queries, that traffic contributed little to conversions anyway; if transactional queries lost ground, strengthening paid makes sense.
Do AI Overviews really raise click costs?
Industry measurement shows costs rising in most industries. AI Overviews are not the only cause: wider adoption of Smart Bidding and more advertisers in the auction push in the same direction.
Is content still worth producing in this environment?
Yes, but the goal changed. Content is now produced not only to win clicks but to be cited by AI engines and build brand authority. Clear definitions, concrete numbers and self-contained answer blocks work better here.
