Conversion tracking is the mechanism that tells Google which ad click turned into a business result. Its importance comes from this: Smart Bidding decides who to bid on, and how much, purely from that signal. A badly configured setup does not just distort reports, it corrupts what the algorithm learns, and over time the account optimizes toward the wrong audience. Setup takes four steps, and verification is the one most often skipped.
How do you choose the primary conversion?
The most common mistake is marking intermediate steps such as pageviews and clicks as primary conversions. That gives the algorithm a confused target: the system starts optimizing for browsing rather than buying. A correct setup has one primary conversion, and it is the event where the business actually makes money.
- E-commerce: purchase should be primary; add to cart and begin checkout stay secondary, for observation only.
- Service businesses: qualified lead should be primary; raw form submissions are usually misleading.
- Phone sales: calls beyond a set duration can be primary, with short calls secondary.
- Apps: not the install but a meaningful post-install action should be the primary conversion.
How do you set up conversion tracking?
Setup takes four steps, and order matters, because adding value tracking later does not backfill historical data and may push the strategy back into learning.
- Choose the goal: define the primary conversion and set the conversion window to match your buying cycle.
- Install the tag: place the conversion tag through a tag manager where possible; see Tag Manager setup.
- Send a value: pass the order total and currency dynamically; a fixed value flattens different basket sizes.
- Verify: place a real test order and confirm the conversion arrives with the correct amount.
What do enhanced conversions do?
Enhanced conversions send customer data such as an email address in hashed form at the moment of conversion, strengthening the match between a click and a result. They recover part of the link lost to browser limits and declined consent. Personal data is never sent raw; hashing happens in the browser or on your server, and consent state must be respected.
Do your conversion numbers agree across platforms?
Ads Sensor unifies Google, Meta, TikTok and Criteo with GA4 and explains measurement gaps through AI analysis.
How do you verify the setup?
Verification has three checks. First existence: place a test order and confirm the conversion appears. Second value: does the reported amount match the real order, including or excluding tax and shipping consistently. Third double counting: if the same conversion arrives from the tag and another source, numbers inflate. To understand the normal gap between Google Ads and GA4, see conversion discrepancy.
How does conversion lag affect reports?
Conversions are credited to the day of the click but land in reports days later. Pausing a campaign based on the last three days is therefore a common mistake: those days are not complete yet. Wait for the conversion window to close before deciding. We covered the bidding side of this in tCPA versus tROAS.
